In May 2009, a DDoS attack on DNS servers in China caused extensive connection failures for several hours. In April 2009, there were multiple attacks which overloaded DNS cache servers by issuing large quantities of DNS queries that return large responses. The largest observed attack reached around 40 Gbps in 2008, a 67% growth over the previous year. A survey from Arbor Networks, a security-engineering firm, indicates that DDoS attacks continue to grow in both scale and sophistication. One important issue of these DDoS attacks is that they are more difficult to detect than the traditional denial of service (DoS) ones. All web servers can be targeted for such attacks. Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have increased in recent years.
